The Vedic New Year is called Tarana and it
began on March 20th, 2004 at 5:42pm in Washington D.C. By looking at the
planetary positions at that moment we are able to gain clues as to the
events that could take shape in the United States during the next year. These planetary positions are as follows: Rising Sign is Leo - 29:50 degrees 1st house - Retrograde Jupiter in Leo - 17:55 3rd House - Ketu in Libra - 19:33 8th House - Moon in Pisces - 6:44 Sun in Pisces - 6:44 Mercury in Pisces - 22:08 9th house - Venus in Aries - 22:27 Rahu in Aries - 19:33 10th house - Mars in Taurus - 5:50 11th house - Saturn in Gemini - 12:32 The planetary cabinet for the year is as follows: Saturn represents The King, Mars is the Prime Minister, The Moon is the Commander in Chief and Minister for Trading and Mercury represents Finance or Treasury. There are other cabinet members indicated as well but for the purposes of this discussion these will suffice. This Tarana has many special features and we will first study the effects of the planets in a broad sense. With regard to the environment and natural occurrences on the earth, this year will bring good rainfall which is quite important for agricultural commodities. However, these rain patterns will be unusual, they will not follow the norm and therefore may be somewhat unpredictable. There will also be a strong potential for hurricanes and in the months of May/June there is the potential for an earthquake. With regard to the economy there are several difficulties and challenges indicated. To begin, there is the possibility of a shortage of grains, so food prices may rise. Even though, as mentioned, agricultural production in general is likely to increase there will still be occasional shortages of products due to poor availability or distribution problems. Therefore, in the months of April and May there will be increases in food prices. As mentioned above, Mercury is the finance minister. In this Tarana chart Mercury is afflicted by the New Moon's position and aspected by the malefic Saturn. This indicates that the financial condition of the country will continue to be, and perhaps may become even more, disorganized and chaotic. The debt will continue to grow with no end in sight this year. As a result, the dollar will continue to lose its value and not return to its original strength until after, at the earliest, April 8th, 2005. With regard to the world of business, mathematics, science and technology will continue to dominate and draw attention, perhaps even more so than in the recent past. This will manifest as either breakthroughs in mathematics or new scientific discoveries. During this year scholars or researchers in mathematics or science may be nominated for a Nobel Prize. While education in general will suffer for want of financial support, special skill education in science, technology and mathematical studies, as well as research activities, will increase. In the area of real estate, property prices are likely to remain at the current level with minor fluctuations. In the creative fields, fine arts, music, cinema, fashion, etc. new and novel ideas will develop. Beauty and elegance in fashion will have a bent toward ultra high-end fashion. Women, especially, will dress tastefully but not conservatively which will attract new heights of showmanship in the fashion world. In the area of health, this year will bring fears due to the sporadic development of new diseases in different parts of the country. In the months of April and May specifically, some new diseases may appear. Also, women will emotionally suffer more in this year. Female problems such as breast cancer may become even more prevalent. Since Saturn is the King he has a strong capacity to influence the media. Saturn's influence will create restrictions in the media and greater control by the government. There will be some new scandals in the media world. Mars is the Prime Minister and Mars is malefic in nature. But Mars is also the Yogakaraka planet for the country this year. This means that he is the most important planet for Leo Rising and therefore he will be able to rule the country with an iron fist. Since Mars is by nature irreligious and very money oriented he lacks sensitivity. Mars does not understand people with religious belief systems different than his own. This fixed manner from members of the cabinet may cause difficulties for those people with differing beliefs. The result is a certain amount of prejudice increasing against those people. Unfortunately, the Administration may not find that it has the ability to rise to the occasion in dealing with these kinds of troubles, they may not be able to deal with the issue effectively. However, in general, most people will feel some sense of security due to the fact that they will feel the government is trying to protect them. In a broad sense, special attention will be given to the care and safety of children. This year our country will also see problems with relation to thievery. Throughout the country an increase in theft will develop. There will also be a continuation of exposed corruption in the business world. In October/November there will be major changes in the cabinet. Even if the Bush administration were to win the election there would be changes in the face of the Administration. There will be an increase in the fear of terrorism. War-like situations will develop for the U.S. but this may only manifest as fear of war. The United States' alliances with its European and other foreign friends will still be at loggerhead and those relationships are not likely to improve significantly. There could be some minor improvements but not much. Despite the somewhat challenging outlook for the coming year, Jupiter, a benevolent planet in the rising sign, makes the people feel optimistic and indicates that the government will give hope to the people about the future of the country. This gives a general overall view of the tone of the coming year. In next month's article I will cover more specifically the United States' position with regard to international relations, North Korea, Al-Qaeda, Osama bin Laden, and the upcoming election.
