Vedic New Year 2006

by Chakrapani Ullal

April 2006

Vedic Astrology recognizes both the Solar and the Lunar Year. The Solar Year always begins on the 13th / 14th of April each year with the ingress of the Sun into the 1st degree of Aries. Its primary use is for marking units of time (i.e. Yugas).

The Vedic Lunar New Year, (Shukla Paksha Pratipada) falls between the 15th of March and the 15th of April yearly, at the first new moon following the spring equinox. It is determined by specific astrological configurations rather than being an arbitrarily assigned day.

The Vedic Calendar operates in 60-year cycles. Each year within a cycle has a specific message for the world as to events to take place. By understanding the significance of the beginning of each year, one can evaluate its influence for the year to come as it applies to the world in general and to countries in particular.

The Vedic New Year chart offers an important tool for gaining insight into the energetic tone and nature of events for the year to come. Proper analysis of Shukla Paksha Pratipada offers the astrologer the insight needed for making accurate predictions, for offering appropriate guidance, and for determining auspicious dates for all manners of ritualistic and worldly activities.

According to the Vedic tradition the Vedic New Year, called Vyaya, for the United States began in Washington, DC on the 29th of March, 2006 at 5:15am. This year the New Year began at the end of a Solar Eclipse.

The planetary position rising at this time are as follows: Aquarius rising 25.01, Mercury at 19.55 in the rising sign. The Moon is in Pisces at 14.38, the Sun is also in Pisces at 14.38, Rahu is also in Pisces at 10.25. Mars is in Taurus at 27.09. Retrograde Saturn is in Cancer at 10.28. Ketu is in Virgo at 10.25. Retrograde Jupiter is in Libra at 23.59. Venus is in Capricorn at 28.10.

For those not familiar with the chart of the United States I am using July 4th, 1776 at 6:30pm (click here to see USA chart with time of 6:30pm) which gives Sagittarius rising with Ketu in the 2nd house in Capricorn, Moon in the 3rd house in Aquarius, Mars, Venus, Jupiter and the Sun in the 7th in Gemini, Rahu and retrograde Mercury in the 8th house in Cancer and Saturn in the 10th house in Virgo.

First let us look at the New Year Chart for the US. When the rising sign is occupied by benevolent Mercury and aspected by benevolent Jupiter, (the Navamsa rising sign is also occupied by natural benefic Jupiter) these beneficial influences become positively supportive of the country in general.

Mercury, the ruler of the 5th house, is in the rising sign in a friendly house and aspected by the benevolent Jupiter. Saturn, the ruler of the rising sign, is placed in the 6th house in Cancer. Mercury supports intellectual pursuits, attention to education and general acknowledgement and support of intellectual and research activities. Therefore, their could be more attention in the coming year toward the education of children and increased attention toward university education. Additionally, Saturn’s placement in Cancer brings to the fore ancient knowledge in the areas of art, literature, anthropology, and many other areas of learning.

This Saturn placed in the 6th house is also indicative of the fact that there will be a lot of struggle on the domestic front economically, in terms of people needing to tighten their belts. The average person will need to be more conservative with their money, there will be less use of goods and services due to this lack but they could also have a tendency to create more debt for themselves.

Saturn placed in the 6th house also brings intense activities connected with health and healing. It brings increasing attention to holistic health, natural health, nutrition and nature cures as well an orientation toward other ancient knowledge about health. So, this Saturn is indicative of a certain amount of struggle for the average person both financially and health wise.

There will also be some struggles in the area of relationships for all couples due to the fact that Saturn is aspecting Venus in this New Year chart. So it is likely that we will see an increase in divorce rates this year.

This malefic aspect to Venus also indicates that women’s organizations, in general, will not receive the support they desire. Females generally will face more challenges this year in certain areas, primarily in terms of lack of job stability.

But in the area of creativity and the arts women will be acknowledged and supported for their enterprising activities. There is progress and excellence indicated for women in these areas and more female artists will receive awards for excellence this year.

Saturn is aspecting Ketu in the 8th house. The 8th house brings suffering, it attracts diseases – because of that it is possible that some contagious and/or mysterious diseases are likely to spread. But, because of the strength and power of the rising sign, perhaps it will be somewhat easily contained.

The Moon, ruler of the 6th house is placed in Pisces in the 2nd house which is indicative of the fact that much money will be spent on dealing with health issues of the population. The Moon’s negativity is accentuated by the conjunction of Rahu. The Sun, ruler of the 7th house is also in the 2nd house in conjunction with Rahu, which may indicate that there will be cracks in our alliances with foreign countries, particularly those that we consider to be our allies.

In addition, the conjunction of Moon, Rahu, Sun in Pisces may indicate that there could be accidents involving water, this includes the oceans or even unusually heavy rainfalls or hurricanes – this is because these are the planets which created the eclipse.

The 2nd house ruler, Jupiter is situated in the 9th house – because of this the countries financial condition, in spite of all the problems mentioned above, may appear to be favorable. However, since the 2nd house has a lot of afflictions, the country will continue to carry heavy burdens of debts and these liabilities will continue to increase in the coming year due to health difficulties and continuing war struggle. Heavy expenditure will continue due to war.

However, interests rates may not rise as much as anticipated and real estate prices might not go down as significantly as people are anticipating. The stock market prices may not rise as much as people anticipate but there could be high demand for commodities associated with metals and minerals.

Mars, the ruler of the 3rd and 10th houses, is situated in the 4th house. And the 4th house yogakaraka planet, Venus is in the 12th house. Mars in the 4th indicates resistance by the people toward government policies and therefore there will be a lot of demonstrations and public verbal attack of the policies. People’s minds will be agitated by the governments positioning.

Also, this configuration reiterates the fact that the country will increase military expenditure due to an increase of military strength and activities in foreign countries. During the year we will also see an increase of violence in the country, including murder.

Now let us turn to the natal chart for the United States, reviewing the Dasa/Bhukti and transits for the coming year. Currently, beginning from July 2006 the country is passing through the Moon Dasa, Venus Bhukti until March 2008. Venus is the ruler of the 6th and 11th house placed in the 7th house from the rising sign. From the Moon sign, Venus is the yogakaraka planet, being the ruler of the 4th and 9th houses, placed in the 5th house.

The Moon Dasa started from October 1998 and continues until October 2008. Moon is the ruler of the 8th house in the 3rd house which has a tendency to create some struggles which may include misunderstandings with allies and unspecified fears and phobias. However, since the Moon is placed in Aquarius, the areas connected with all sorts of intellectual and philosophical pursuits, creative intelligence as well as the communication and information technology fields are all supported.

Venus’ sub-cycle can give both positive and negative results. It supports all kinds of creative and intellectual activities but, since this Venus is associated with malefic Sun, conjunct malefic Mars and aspected by malefic Saturn, it does not support harmonious domestic life. Increases in strife and struggle in relationships is indicated as it was also indicated in the New Year chart.

Looking at the major transits during the year, Saturn will continue its transit in Cancer until July 2007 but for a short period, November 2006 until January 2007 it goes into Leo before returning to Cancer. This temporary transit of Saturn in Leo is not considered favorable, it intensifies and accentuates the negative tendencies indicated for the year.

Currently, Rahu is transitting in the 4th house of the US chart in Pisces but it will go into Aquarius in the beginning of November, 2006. In Aquarius it will conjunct the Moon and will continue to transit Aquarius until the beginning of May, 2008.

The transit in Pisces was not conducive to tolerance between religious belief systems. The Aquarius transit it comparatively more favorable, it will bring many new ideas and imagination with regard to health and healing as well as new ideas with regard to philosophical and spiritual matters.

Currently, Jupiter is transiting the 11th house of the US chart in Libra until the end of October, 2006. At the end of October it will enter into Scorpio and will remain in Scorpio until late November 2007.

In Libra, Jupiter supported growth in the area of learning, knowledge and talent due to its aspect onto Gemini. This placement has protected the country from greater financial loss because it put effort into trying to maintain its economic strength. In Scorpio, there is a chance that the dollars value may increase and the United States may continue to increase their financial support of underdeveloped countries.
